Parts of a Basic Guitar
First step in that direction is to familiarize your self with the various parts of the guitar and their significance.
* Headstock is the topmost part of the guitar where the tuners are located and are instrumental in adjusting the pitch of the strings on the guitar.
* Nut is the semi-hard material responsible for the lateral alignment of the strings and connecting the headstock with the fretboard.
* Frets are metal strips located on the fredboard that runs along the neck of the guitar.
* Fretboard also called a fingerboard is a long strip of wood that houses the frets of the guitar.
* Strings are the most important part of the guitar, which produces the desired sounds when plucked or strummed.
* Sound hole is the round hole in the guitar that resonates the sound produced while playing the guitar.
Know your Guitar Strings
E, A, D, G, B, and E are the names of the strings on the guitar ranging from the thickest (sixth string Low E) to the thinnest (first string High E). The standard tuning procedure involves tuning of the sixth string to the first string in the order mentioned above. Plucking a string that is open without fretting it is the basic way to produce a sound on the guitar.
Learn to Fret a Note
A guitar can have as many as 24 frets. O fret is the open note on each string. You need to place your finger behind the fret you want to play, push down on it, and then pluck the string to fret a note. This is one of the best ways to play a note.
Keep a Tab on Guitar Tablature
Learning to read the tabs is an important lesson in playing a basic guitar. Tablature is nothing but a notation for stringed instruments especially guitar, indicating the notes to be played to produce the desired sound. It consists of 6 lines representing the 6 strings of guitar with the first string High E being the top line and the sixth one on the bottom line. Frets to be played on are indicated by the numbers on the lines and the notes should be played from left to right.
Basic Skills for Playing a Guitar
You have to know how to strum and pick a guitar before mastering the major and minor chords, scales, riffs, and licks of guitar. Practice strumming on a guitar by pressing your thumb lightly against the sixth string and letting it run lightly across all the other strings. Picking is a technique wherein you press your thumb lightly on the one string and move it down towards the floor. Pick a new song to practice your skills.
Perseverance, practice, and patience while learning these basic guitar lessons can enable you to play a few songs on your guitar effortlessly.
